The Green Key program aims to promote good social and environmental practices, based on the adoption of sustainable behavior, reduction of environmental impact on commercial activities, and minimization and effectiveness of natural resources.
The Blue Flag association, responsible for the national program, awarded with "Green Flag" 10 Algarve tourist establishments.
In an interview, the president of the Algarve Tourism Region, Desidério Silva, refers the advantages of this distinction as being a good way for the Algarve to be considered a tourist reference on an international level, and adds "[...] Here’s more proof that the Algarve is moving towards sustainable tourism.”
In addition to the Pine Cliffs Resort, seven more establishments were awarded: Conrad hotels (Quinta do Lago - Loulé), Hilton Vilamoura, Vila Galé Albacora (Tavira), Aqua Pedra dos Bicos (Albufeira), Vale d'el Rei (Lagoa ), Velamar (Albufeira), as well as the Casa Vale da Lama agritourism unit (Odiáxere - Lagos) and Casa Biota-Este and Casa BiotaOeste accommodation units, both in Sagres (Vila do Bispo).
